If it was "get rid of your US citizenship or be deported" scenario, my decision to get rid of my US citizenship would be a lot easier to make.

If you're born as a dual citizen, you're technically supposed to choose when you turn 20 -- if you don't, your Japanese citizenship can be revoked and deported, but this hasn't happened yet since the law was enacted yet, so I think I'm safe. Hah.

You are permitted dual citizenship in two cases (that I know of): being born with it and acquiring it through marriage

I wonder what would happen if I just said that I'm not a US citizen.

Some banks will flat-out reject you because you're an American -- they don't even want to deal with the paperwork.

Not to mention, the stupid IRS clamping down on foreign accounts means it's even harder to open a bank account here. Ugh.

Anyways, I've been increasingly considering forfeiting my US citizenship over the past few years, and those feelings are getting really high. My only reservation is that I might want to move back to the US sometime, after Lisa is old enough to move out… But is it worth the paperwork and the taxes… :-S

Is it OK if I bury my head in the sand for 4 years?
